Tip Jar Thursdays! No. 12 - Page… to… Page

Happy Thursday, friends! The sun finally peeked out from behind the clouds in Brooklyn this afternoon, which I found especially appropriate for this post’s theme today:

To give you all a bit of sketchbook inspiration, we are highlighting the work of SBP artists who have really gotten into the transition of their artwork from page to page.

How did they do it?

With a little finesse & an x-acto knife, these windows were cut into the pages of their sketchbooks, not only giving us a hint of what we were to view next, but also providing a really great way of achieving cohesion within their work.

The first book we’re looking at today is by Laura Stitzel, from Northcote in Australia (We had the pleasure of meeting Laura at the SB Tour’s Homecoming event last month!):

Working with the theme, “..you’d be home by now,” her beautiful line drawings are given added depth by the miniature windows cut cleverly into her compositions to reveal hints of creatures living within.

This next sketchbook is by 2010 artist, Charles Clary, from Murfreesboro, Tennessee:

Following an initial cut shape, the abstraction evolves in color, form, and composition. We wish you all could be here to actually view this book in person, because it has such a sculptural quality to it.

This final sketchbook is one of my favorites that I’ve seen so far this year! 2011 sketchbook artist, Katie McEwen from New York, NY:

Katie’s gorgeous paintings and line work find themselves in new environments, bodies, & clothing with the turn of the page. These shifts almost become part of a plot throughout the book.

And just one more…

Windows and intentionally placed cuts are such a fun way to travel through a sketchbook! If anyone has been experimenting with this process in their 2012 sketchbook, definitely give us a shout.
