Oh the Wonderful World of Jars

As inspiration for this week’s free 10 x 10 Series project, we’ve decided to explore the wonderful world of jars. The Jar Project is such a fun opportunity for anyone to get creative within the confines of a small space. Along with other kinds of knickknacks & vintage-inspired items, we love jars here at Art House: whether they’re used to store the pens on our desks or hold a candle, provide the home for a cactus plant or as a drinking cup, there are about a million practical & creative ways to get down with jars.

So if you’ve signed up for The Jar Project and want some inspiration for your forthcoming jar-creations, we’ve compiled some cool examples of things to do with a jar, or any small space for that matter.

Terrariums

One fun thing to do with a jar is create a terrarium, or small enclosed environment. While we unfortunately can’t accept jars for the project that contain anything “hazardous, perishable or stinky” (including living plants!), you can design a mini environment from inanimate things. The prehistoric terrarium above was created by Etsy artist Tony Larson, and we love what he’s done with all non-living materials! Below is another cool terrarium we found, and there’s even a tutorial that will guide you through the steps of making one like it!

Dioramas

According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, a diorama is “a scenic representation in which sculptured figures and lifelike details are displayed usually in miniature so as to blend indistinguishably with a realistic painted background.” While all of the examples below weren’t necessarily created in jars, they can still be great inspiration for creating tiny worlds within the confines of an unusual space.

Sculpture, Paintings, & Found Materials

Some very inspiring jar art was created in 2011 by artist Kirsty Hall. It’s called 365 Jars, and every day for almost a year she filled little jars with mini paintings, found objects, and art sculptures, then set them off into the wild for strangers to find and enjoy! So cool.

The Jar Project: The Jar Project will form the first communal installation at the Brooklyn Archives, our new storefront exhibition space. We’re bringing together our global community and our New York neighbors to create a world of tiny sculptures in hundreds of little glass jars. Sign up to receive a jar or snag one in person if you’re in NYC. Then capture your imagination, screw on the lid, and make the most of a tiny space!

We can’t wait to see what you create!
